HHS Awards $12 Million to Support Primary Care Training

Funding will support training for more than 300 residents in community-based settings
TUESDAY, July 23 (HealthDay News) -- $12 million in Affordable Care Act (ACA) funds is being awarded to support primary care residency programs in 32 Teaching Health Centers, according to a report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The funding, which is part of the ACA Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Payment Program, will be administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration and will expand residency training in community-based settings. Training will include family and internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and general and pediatric dentistry.
According to the report, the number of states with Teaching Health Centers will increase from 14 (in 2012) to 21, and there will be more than double the number of residents trained, with more than 300 residents training during 2013 to 2014. The Teaching Health Centers are located in urban, rural, and Tribal communities and serve populations such as veterans and their families, minority communities, older adults, children, and adolescents.
"Teaching Health Centers help attract students who are committed to serving communities of need and prepare them to practice in these communities," Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, said in a statement. "Students exposed to training opportunities in health center settings are more likely to stay in these communities and continue to contribute to the care of their residents."
