Health Tip: Before You Take This Heartburn Medication...

Factors to consider when using a proton pump inhibitor
(HealthDay News) -- A proton pump inhibitor, a drug commonly taken for heartburn, may cause side effects.
The American Academy of Family Physicians lists these factors to consider before using a proton pump inhibitor (PPI):
If you're a postmenopausal woman, talk with your doctor because a PPI could increase your risk for bone fractures. If you've been treated for a C. difficile infection, check with your doctor because PPIs may increase the risk of the infection returning. If you have problems with your immune system or are elderly, check with your doctor because PPIs may increase the risk of pneumonia.
